Thereness
Thereness is a condition of existence in the present moment, being there and living that moment. I started working on this film during the lockdown that I experienced due to COVID-19. It reflects my thoughts and emotions while experiencing this new situation as I wondered what our life would look like from now on. I tried to show my concerns about the future, the new normals, new forms of waste. I used the rotoscope technique to make these animated drawings. I combined six different loops; each of these loops tries to tell a story. They are inspired by the mundane events I was going through during the lockdown. I tried to show my concerns towards the future, the new normals, new forms of waste, and raise the question of, what does “togetherness” really mean to each of us in situations like this?

I am Maedeh Mosaverzadeh (Mayi Mosaver), an Iranian visual artist based in Canada. I am a second-year MFA candidate at the University of Calgary. In my practice, I use Experimental animation, Videography, drawing, and collage to express my feelings and concerns towards the environment. I hope to bring awareness about plastic pollution through my art.
We live in the age of plastic; everything we use is somehow made out of this material, and it has made our life a lot more convenient. However, this convenience in using single-use plastic materials is destroying the ecosystem. My concerns for the environment started when I lived in Iran; I visited the Caspian Sea and saw the beach covered in plastic. Most countries struggle with their waste. Besides, with the high demand for PPE in the time of a pandemic and all the measurements that we are required to take, the use of single-use plastic has increased even more.
I create short films through Experimental animation to discuss issues surrounding plastic pollution in a narrative language with frame by frame animation and collage. In this regard, I try to explore the ways that art can evoke emotions towards environmental problems caused in the time of Anthropocene.
