Director Biography - Zacharias Wolfe

Originally coming from a background as a performer Zacharias started composing half way through a degree in oboe at The Royal College of Music in London. At RCM he studied with Dr Haris Kittos and oboe with Olivier Stankiewicz and graduated with distinction in 2020. During his studies he was generously supported by a Keith Poole award. Currently he is enrolled at The Royal College
of Music in Stockholm where he is studying for a Masters in music with Per Mårtensson.

In the past he has worked with ensembles such as Norbotten NEO, Apartment house and Quatuor
Bozzini. His music has appeared in Sweden, UK, Italy, Hungary and France and in venues such as the Royal Academy of Art in London, Hackney Old Baths, Amaryllis Fleming Hall, Kalv
contemporary music festival, Villa Carlotta in Como, Italy and Dartington Music Festival in Devon, UK. However, his interest in collaboration has also lead him to work with dancers as part of the
techno and dance event ‘Inklingroom’, sculptors in Royal College of Art, digital animator Zhekun Wang and worked with Raindance nominated filmmaker Beatrix Blaise on her short film ‘The
Menace’. His passion for collaboration and interest in working across disciplines has also lead him to produce and co-direct the short film ‘The Anatomy of a Caress’ which got selected out of 400
submissions for presentation at the annual audio/visual arts festival SOUND/IMAGE in Greenwich University, London in 2022. In 2022 he also produced the sold out immersive exhibition Stratus.
This was a mix between an installation experience and experience in VR in The Crypt Gallery in London for which he also wrote the music. Recently his piece ‘Slough’ was premiered as part of the
100th anniversary of the composer György Ligeti in Liszt French Academy of Music in Budapest and he also founded and produced the new music and interdisciplinary arts festival ‘Hjorted Art
And Music Festival’ which had its premier run 14-16 August 2023 in Hjorted, Sweden.

Common threads in both his instrumental and electronic pieces is a focus on thresholds both in
methods of composing and execution. Thresholds between microtonal and tonal music, between
listener and player, between individual and collective, between ‘mine’ and ‘yours’ and between
familiarity and strangeness. He is especially interested in exploring interpersonal relationships
through various levels of audience involvement and subverting various pieces within a shared
(western) musical heritage and by extension exploring questions around nostalgia and deja vu.
Outside of music he likes to dance, socialise, read and organise events for people to come together.
The latter, a’hobby’ that often takes way too much time for his own good.
