Lucas Bugeja and Matthew Bugeja are brothers and directors from Adelaide, Australia. They began their early filmmaking careers shooting music videos for local artists using the first video-capable DSLRs. Since 2013 they have been working in the advertising industry where they have filmed, directed, and produced commercials for TV. Their first narrative work, the short film 'Lyrebird' was released in 2022.
Our film 'Thereafter' started as a combination of very specific visual imagery, and the desire to tell a story centred around internal struggle. The theme of regret was poignant at the time of its writing, and began naturally marrying together with the imagery we were developing. The resulting combination is a psychological and metaphoric journey of a man desperately trying to return to his past, haunted by the memories of his lost love.
As the film developed, it became evident we were illustrating the deeply internal conflicts associated with mental health. This steered us through production to be true, to not hold back from darker and more difficult moments, and to represent painful themes in creative ways.
In order to assist the viewer in deciphering the protagonist's journey as the film dips back and forth between memory and internal struggle, we were very precise with our choices of lenses and camera grip, wardrobe, blocking, locations, and colour grades.
We believe the viewer will be able to use all of these elements to piece together the narrative, and to determine the different modes and levels of storytelling.
We are so thankful to have had the incredible talents of our cast, who understood what we wanted to achieve, and delivered exceptional and raw performances. We are also thankful for our crew, who made every day a joy on set, and whose hard work is evident on the screen.
