The otter, a legend returns (NL)

Hilco Jansma (1979) is a Dutch biologist and wildlife filmmaker. During his childhood he developed a great interest in the natural world. Studying biology was the most logical next step. After his studies he took up his hobby in filming and eventually switched careers in 2014. In 2015 he released his first documentary ‘The Noorderplantsoen’ which was selected for several international wildlife film festivals, receiving a special mention twice. Now it was time for another film adventure, one that took longer than expected, because of a shy and mysterious subject; the Dutch otter. Albatross World Sales had by then already offered a contract for international distribution. With the support of Cees van Kempen (Ispida Wildlife Productions), Hilco set out to film and research the otter that had just made a comeback in The Netherlands. After 3 years he gathered enough footage to produce the first documentary on the elusive and rare Dutch otter. Dutch public broadcaster EO signed a contract to air it January 2021 in The Netherlands, at the start of the year of the otter. This premiere (+repeat) had 1.1 million viewers.

Bio Nederlands

Hilco Jansma (1979) is een Nederlandse bioloog en natuurfilmer. Tijdens zijn jeugd ontwikkelde hij al een grote interesse voor de natuur. Biologie studeren was dan ook een logische stap. Na zijn studie pakte hij het filmen op als hobby en zette dit in 2014 om naar een fulltime baan. In 2015 bracht hij zijn eerste documentaire ‘Het Noorderplantsoen’ uit, die werd geselecteerd voor verschillende internationale natuurfilmfestivals en ontving tweemaal een eervolle vermelding. Nu was het tijd voor een ander filmavontuur, welke langer duurde dan verwacht. Een documentaire over de otter in Nederland. Albatross World Sales boodt al snel een contract aan voor internationale distributie. Met steun van Cees van Kempen (Ispida Wildlife Productions) zette Hilco het filmproject op over hoe de otter een comeback maakte in Nederland. Na 3 jaar te hebben gefilmd, o.a. met otterexpert Marten Boonstra, beschikte hij over genoeg beeldmateriaal voor de productie van de eerste documentaire over de schuwe en zeldzame Nederlandse otter. Met de EO tekende hij een contract om de film begin januari 2021 uit te zenden op NPO1. Dit was tevens de start van het jaar van de otter. Deze première (+herhaling) had 1,1 miljoen kijkers.
