Director Biography - Bert Juliaan Vercruysse

My first camera
I was eight years old when, and without really knowing what was going on, I received my first Holy Communion, a day of feast, family and gifts. Today the believe is gone but I still have this one gift, a small analog Kodak camera. It was one of favorite objects those days. And It stayed around my neck for a long time.
Today I have a lot of different kinds of camera’s, some I got from friends, others I inherit from my parents but more important: photography will always stay close to me.
My first travel
When I was ten years old my parents took me and my brother on our first big trip: One month of traveling around and visiting friends in Indonesia. My Kodak camera snapped Indonesian hospitality, the Borobudur temple, rice fields on Sumatra and boiling mud in a volcanic crater.
After this travel my parents started to safe for the next. This made it possible for us to go on a big journey each two years: New York, Ecuador, Zambia and Egypt. When I was eighteen they told me I was big enough to travel alone and, I did. From then on I used my vacations to travel to Latvia, Poland, Holland, France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, where I am at this moment, writing a biography.

My first study
I was born and raised in a small town, 40km away from Brussels, called Aalst. Else than a yearly carnival it didn’t had a lot to offer, so for higher education I decided to go to Brussels. At that moment I knew I wanted to make animated films but I had the feeling I wanted to learn more about what was going on in the world, so started a bachelor in political science. Three years later, I got a distinction in the bachelor animation Film at the LUCA school of Arts, and will never stop learning. Next year I’ll try to get my two masters: one in political science and the other in audio-visual Arts.

My first movie
It all happened in the bureau of a best friend’s dad. Alexander had the equipment and stories about film, I had the urge to make an animation. We made a cut-out alien named Boris, greeting planet Earth. It was short, cheap and relatively funny, but it cleared the way for more. And I never stopped producing. Last three years, I’ve made more than ten short movies, combining my experiences in photography, travels, studies and persistence.
I hope one day I can make a living with my animations. And if not, well, nobody will stop me creating new animated stories.
