The last five hundred years.

Floyd takes a road trip with his mother, Catherine, and his twelve-year-old little sister, Katie. Behind they leave a dead Ryan, Floyd’s stepfather, who happens to be a renowned hero and sheriff of their hometown, Evergreen. The police, having knowledge of Ryan’s murder and with all leads pointing at Floyd, must hurry to catch him before Catherine can help him flee the country.
On the road, in a different town, Floyd meets the charm-witted Charlotte, who takes him to Mike Dean, the man from whom he will acquire fake passports. Mike promises to deliver in two days as a means to settle an old debt. Mike is to mail the passports to an address Floyd leaves him.
Floyd and family then head to see Richard, an old friend of Catherine's and crucial pillar to her marriage with her now-deceased first husband and forever love, Talisman, who is also Floyd’s father. That night at Richard’s, after a confrontation, Catherine confesses to Floyd that Ryan was sexually abusive to Katie.
Meanwhile, Evergreen proceeds to give Ryan a proper hero's goodbye. Amber, who is Floyd’s girlfriend and a worshiper of Ryan, is chosen to receive the honor on behalf of the absent family at the parade.
Catherine and her kids turn their focus to Onopo, a cenote spot that she and Talisman used to visit as teenagers. While there, Katie breaks down and confronts her family about their failure to help her when she asked for help. Catherine and Floyd apologize to her; they bond and promise to fight whatever comes next as a family.
Early next morning, the family drives into a metro. And on the way to the airport, after securing the passports, a police car chases them. To avoid catastrophe, Floyd surrenders to a traffic officer, only for the car that was in pursuit to run past them. It never came after them. Paranoia had him chained, and it’s too late to go back. Floyd is arrested while his family drives away.
At Ryan’s funeral, a free Floyd shows up to unwelcoming faces. He reveals to Amber that Ryan was no different from the man he saved her from when she was a teenager—that he was a child predator.
As Floyd drives away, we realize that Ryan was the one who first exposed him to the harsh realities of the American justice system's treatment of black people. And Floyd, being black, tricked the system into chasing him while the real killers, his Caucasian mother and sister, escape the country. Nine months later, Floyd is reunited with his family in Tanzania. They did it! The system delivered.
