Director Biography - Elisa Baccolo

I was born in a little town near Milan, Italy. Since childhood, I have been in love with reading and writing, so much that I was sure I would become a writer someday (which, in the end , did not reveal to be the case). After High School, I stumbled into a crisis, as I felt I would have not been able to combine my interests and make something out of it. I ended up studying Philosophy, which made me fall in love with Cognitive Neurosciences, which made me travel and live in London for I while, where I learnt how to use a camera and engage in street photography. When I went back to Italy, I started a PhD, while also graduating at the Documentary Filmmaking course of Film School Luchino Visconti in Milan. Here, I deepened my interest in Cinema and I was confronted with the first experience of making a film, realizing a documentary called Senza Negazione (No Negation) which addresses the taboo of death in contemporary society. The short movie was screened at various international film festivals, such as Rome Independent Film Festival, Bellaria Film Festival, Sguardi Altrove Film Festival and Lucania Film Festival. Since then I attended a Masterclass on Relational Cinema with Roberto Minervini, a Summerschool with filmmakers Lech Kowalski, F.J. Ossang, Bertrand Mandico and Lea Mysius, and a Lectio Magistralis held by Sergei Loznitsa. In November 2019 I attended a laboratory for the development of a documentary film project at Frontlab (FrontDoc Film Festival, Aosta) and I was selected to attend the first National School of Participatory Video and Documentary Filmmaking held by the italian production company Zalab, which was founded by the italian filmmaker Andrea Segre.
