The cost

The Cost in an experiment, as much about process as anything else. The resemblance between a till roll and a film strip is what initiated the project. I first began to draw on blank till rolls and then tried ways to thermal print over printed shop receipts, which I did by laser etching and then, when COVID restrictions prevented access to the laser, with a receipt printer. I might have used different imagery if it weren't for shops being closed because of COVID lockdowns, but pushing an empty shopping trolley around my neighbourhood felt fittingly absurd in a Beckettesque fashion and also a commentary about retail: it felt as if the whole of our lives stopped when we were unable to shop.
