The Nights

A film about the progress of time, Night in Singapore celebrates the beauty of the night, featuring noises recorded from real life. The film opens with the dazzling lights of the city, followed by the stillness of sleep with the chirping of cicadas and ending with the rousing of the city's inhabitants as they rise to a new morning.

Director Biography - Yap Jing Wen

Singapore is a very prosperous and busy city, but living in this city feels suffocating. I notice after nightfall, it gave a different kind of magical feeling. The pace began to slow down, people are relaxing with the night. I want my film to showcase the country "live" with the people. I divided it into 12 short scenes and counted on the 12 hours of the night from 9 pm to 9 am. Gradually see that the city transit from active to relaxed, ready to sleep, wake up slowly, and return to work.

The biggest challenge is what to portray into the shots and I have travelled around Singapore to find the best pictures to represent Singapore, and how each scene should look like. I want the audio to be like the breath of the city. When people listen to the audio, they can feel what happened at a certain time and bring themselves into the scene. I have recorded most of my audio by traveling around Singapore and always pay attention to the environment.

I enjoyed producing this project very much and I started to notice the environment sound more after I start making this project. It is a fun experience to go out and take photos again of the scenery in Singapore.
I feel I am more suitable to be a motion graphic artist/ photographer after this project because I have learned a lot throughout the making of it and how to portray my view of Singapore.
