The Weïrd Sisters
A Shakespearean fever dream, full of sound and fury, carries us through the events of “Macbeth” as seen through the otherworldly eyes of The Weïrd Sisters. Peep through the blanket of the dark at the hurly burly of these iconic witches; puppeteers of fate; agents of the awesome power of nature, working their craft against the brittle hubris of man. Unfettered by the flow of time; twisting darkness out of light; these "black and midnight hags" cast their spell.

Billy studied at Kingston School of Art, graduating as a graphic designer in 2010, but soon after beginning his career in the design world, his lifelong love of film quickly pulled him in a different direction. Self taught in the craft of filmmaking, he is now the founder and director of BiLLO Studio, a film production company, alongside associate director Kaya Bucholc. Billy is a director, writer, and editor, and has created various short films, documentaries, corporate videos, and art films. Despite his previous film experience, The Weïrd Sisters is a first for him in many ways; challenging him as a visual and aural storyteller more than any previous film; pushing him into new territory of cinematography, sound design, and editing; and honing his skills in ways he is excited to carry forward into his next project.
I learned a new word working on this project: chthonic. From what I understand it essentially means "of the earth". Our witches are chthonic; they are part of the land; ancient as the hills; bound to the earth; they don't simply command nature, they are nature. As we dove into the many challenges of this film, finding a method within cinema of capturing the mysticism which Shakespeare wove into their words, we also went deeper into the meaning of the play and it's themes. I was fascinated by this notion of their awesome natural power, how small and insignificant the arrogance of man's ambition seemed compared to the ancient processes that carved the landscape surrounding him. This film became a kind of poem about man vs nature, and used the figures of the witches to frame the chaos caused by Macbeth's violation of nature's laws. There were so many challenges making this film: demanding source material, that only gets more complex the more you investigate it; a unfamiliar filming technique where everything had multiple layers of inversion and reversal which created more than a few headaches; and greater demand on score and sound design, which pushed me greatly as a director when working with our phenomenal composer. I’m very proud to have lead this group of creators, and I’m proud of the film we’ve made, in all its feral psychedelic glory! I truly hope by committing to pushing this film out into the festival circuit that we’re able to find it’s audience, and share this with people who will enjoy the wild ride of watching it as much as we relished the challenge of making it!
