What hurts more than unrequited love is an unrequited future, and trying to move on from grief and loss especially with a significant other.
Being in love, and dreaming about the future only to find out that that future isn't meant to be and trying to find closure in that can be difficult. Which is why as the film progresses we see the colors becoming more and more colder as Akira has to finally let go of Yana, reality sinking in.
Visually we see that Akira is always moving out to the left of frame signifying that to let go of the past one must not run away from it but to face it, with Yana always following behind Akira, and finally at the end Akira is leaving the movie to the right of frame signifying change, growth and letting go.
