The Violin Maker

Luiz Amorim is a craftsman from humble origins. Luiz built everything from bee boxes to his own house. Luiz fell in love with Betina, also an artist. Their first child wanted to study music so they got to know the cello. So they started to make instruments from the violin family. While mastering the art, they had two more children, who also got involved in liuteria. In the course of time, renowned musicians from São Paulo's Orchestra appeared at the studio. They all ordered instruments. Eventually, the family decided to move to the birthplace of the violin. Now, the Amorims live and work in Cremona, Italy, ranking among the most important studios in the world, creating beautiful instruments as they shape themselves as a beautiful family.

Director Biography - Fernando Coelho

Born in Curitiba, Brazil, in 1981, Fernando entered college in 1999. At that time, there was hardly any film production in the country. Fernando already dreamed of making movies but ended up studying journalism because there were no prospects of working in the seventh art.

However, in the following years, the digital revolution in audiovisual production made this dream a little less impossible. Furthermore, the release of "City of God" was a breath of hope that led Fernando to dream again.

While still in college, he made his first digital short films and participated in festivals, winning some awards. Later, he pursued a postgraduate degree in cinema and soon began working on film and advertising sets, performing various roles.
In 2003, he went to London, where he took a course in low-budget feature films at Central Saint Martins. In 2011, he went to Barcelona and completed a master's degree in film direction at ESCAC (Cinema and Audiovisual School of Catalonia).

Afterward, he returned to Curitiba and completed numerous fiction projects, including shorts and TV pilot episodes, participating in various film and television festivals in different countries.

In recent years, after becoming the father of twins, he started exploring themes about families through the documentary format.
Now, he is completing his first feature film, "Il Liutaio," about a family of violin makers.

Simultaneously, in addition to being a very active father, he directs advertising films and writes fiction books.

Director Statement

When Fernando became a father, coincidentally, he learned about the story of Luiz Amorim and embarked on his first feature film in a handmade manner. Fernando would visit the Amorim family's workshop with his own camera, alone.

The production took on new possibilities when Fernando accompanied the delivery of a violin in São Paulo to one of Brazil's greatest violinists. The film went through an extensive editing process, and meanwhile, the Amorim family moved to Cremona, Italy. Fernando then directed a recording remotely to capture the final chapter of this violin-making family's journey.

The end result, the feature film "Il Liutaio," not only tells the story of one of the greatest violin makers of today but also showcases the journey of this family who achieved their dreams in a harmonious and magnificent way.
