This is second episode in the series. Exonerated of murder and proven competent, Victor oversees a successful Venus probe launch but suffers gender abuse from team members. In a new job at the CIA she questions her lifelong aversion to male relationships. Her former boss from NASA returns from exile under an alias, and recruits Victor to be on his new team of scientists charged with examining an artefact recovered from Venus. She is uniquely comfortable with him, perhaps too comfortable. He is her boss. The scientists prove intelligent beings once were on Venus and realize strange messages are concealed in the artefact. Powerful forces intervene to prevent the team from decoding the messages.
