Director Statement

I had always been intrigued by the visual aspect of the sci-fi genre and anything cyberpunk, so when I had the chance to create my own animation in an introductory class during my first semester at NYU, I thought it would be the perfect medium to bring my surreal vision to life. I wanted the protagonist to be a character that is more than just what they look like, and will throw the audience off when they find out what they truly are. Having only been in NYC for a few weeks at that time, I found that there was a strong disgust sentiment towards street rats (which is reasonable). But since they were so looked down upon and universally regarded as unwanted, I thought it would be interesting to make them secret agents as people least expect it, and give them importance to humans. The word “underdog” is what inspired the title The Underrats. I really enjoyed the animating process of this film, and I would love to make sequels in the future.
