The Square

Attempting to grope the immeasurable geometry of feelings, she loops on the perimeter of an impeccable shape, the square. The square does not condone any mistakes and drives the individual to the quest of a never-ending pattern, of a structure within a structure, within a structure, on a seemingly infinite existence in between our familiar dimensions. Trapped in the architecture of her own mind, she is trying to balance between the geometry of sentiments and the vanity of human rationalization. Are fractals the answer to inner human geometry?

Director Biography - Sofia Kondylia

Sofia Kondylia is a double-disciplined, awarded choreographer, performer and artistic researcher, who has been presenting research and performance work since 2015. She holds an MA in Performance Practices from ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnhem, The Netherlands (2020) and an MA in Architectural Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (2012), as well as a BA in Dance and Dance Pedagogy from Rallou Manou Higher Professional Dance School, Athens, Greece (2014).

Since 2015, she has been exploring a creative interchange between the practices of architecture and choreography through conducting practice-based research and performance art projects. Both of her two research projects, “Architecture + Dance” (2011-2017) and “Performing Geometries” (2018-ongoing) have so far resulted in various performances (e.g. “The Square”/2020, “BodIS”/2019, “Asleep”/2018, “Sympraxis”/2017, “Human Constructions”/2016-2017, “Between Me”/2015), screendance works (“The Square”/2020, “Squared”/2020), original dance/architecture performance practices shared through her “Architecture + Dance” choreography and performance workshop, as well as in a release-based dance and improvisation practice of space shared through her “Spatial Flow” class and workshops. She has also presented an original way of documenting her dance practice (“Pictographic Glyphs”/ 2020) in "Performing Geometries: The Square" research.

Her work has been awarded governmental, as well as private funding, as well as international awards (2020, "The Square"-Special Mention / 2016, "Human Constructions" - International Distinction from Greek Contemporary Dance Platform). She has received numerous artistic residencies (e.g. Citymoves/UK, PAF/FR, Megaron/GR, Duncan Dance Centre/GR, Hydra Animart 2019/GR, Egomio Cultural Centre/CY), toured her work at international festivals (Scotland, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden, The Netherlands, California, Argentina) and given lectures in international conferences (Italy, Greece). She has been constantly teaching since 2014 in Greece and currently in Scotland.

Director Statement

"I am a choreographer interested in the emotional and dramaturgical qualities of creating space through body movement. My work stems from the actualization of a simple truth: that movement creates space. My double-disciplined background, as a dancer and architect, expands my work on the versatile intersections between dance and architecture through artistic research, dance, performance, physical theater and screendance work. I aim in creating spaces where the body is simultaneously realized as mind, and vice versa, during and through the dancing praxis, provoking thinking shift and change."
