Today more than ever you hear the phrase "stick to sports." The phrase has become analogous with telling some not to mix their political views or speak out against injustices in the world of sports. Often times when we do hear people share their hot takes on certain topics in sports it is the same voices repeatedly on the same channels. Rarely is there a voice for the fans to be heard in a forum that isn't quick and allows them to express their ideas. Rarely do we get to hear fans comment on social issues and their impact on sports.
As an avid sports fan I recognized this in the climate of sports media and wanted to change the conversation. Therefore I created a web series 'The Sports Walk'. The Sports Walk is simply an unique web series where diverse sports fans and/or athletes take a walk & share their views at the intersection of sports & society.
Each episode features a particular individual talking about various topics in sports and sharing their feelings on how it has impacted either them or society. The people in the episodes take a walk through a particular neighborhood while speaking directly to the audience as they are walking along the streets of a neighborhood in the city or town.
The first season of the web series focuses on topics such as sexuality, homophobia, sexism, racism, social activism and wage disparity in sports.
My hope is that viewing the series would create moments for people to think about how sports, politics and society are truly interconnected. I hope the series is a rebuttal towards those uttering "stick to sports" instead of listening to diverse groups share their perspectives on how they are affected socially either as fans or athletes.
Through the voices of the people in The Sports Walk we begin to understand why sports is important to many people and why taking time to listen and understand the perspectives of others is important if we to truly affect change in society.
I hope that The Sports Walk starts a dialogue on a variety of subjects within sports well after the final credits.
