The Song of Aurora

After a tragic accident, Margit receives an unexpected visit from her late mother-in-law, Juula, who brought sleeping pills to help Margit with her grief. The gift does not help Margit with her feelings of loss. Instead, it takes her to a dream-state, resulting in hallucinations of her dead girlfriend, Aurora.

Director Biography - Stella Carneiro

Stella is a Brazilian director, writer and visual artist from Recife, Pernambuco, with a degree in Film from FAAP/São Paulo. She recently finished her Masters in Screenwriting in Portugal through Kino Eyes and has worked on over thirty short-films, a few Brazilian features and television series for some of Brazil’s biggest film production companies - Gullane, Paris Entertainment and REC Produtores. Stella’s last few years were spent as an assistant screenwriter for the 2nd season of the television series “Jailers”, as well as alongside director Marcelo Gomes’ for his film “Joaquim”, which premiered at Berlinale. Recently, a feature-film screenplay written by her was awarded in the most prestigious screenplay festival in Latin America, FRAPA, located in Porto Alegre, while a short-film she wrote, "Found You" (Leidsin) was selected for screening in Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) in Tallinn, Estonia.

Director Statement

Directed by Stella Carneiro, “Aurora Laul” is an Estonian short-film made with a female crew of producers, Nevena Semova and Andjela Lazic, as well as a female director of photography, Sofía Steiner G. The lead cast, Ester Kuntu and Elina Reinold are both well-known in the Estonian film and television industry. Ester worked in “Truth and Justice” (2019) and Elina currently stars in the TV Series, "Kättemaksukontor".
“Aurora Laul” centres on topics of homosexuality, motherhood and grief interpreted beautifully by the female-driven cast and crew. The short-film tells the story of Margit (Ester Kuntu) and her unexpected encounters with her former mother-in-law (Elina Reinold). Through the cinematography, the viewer is transported to the dream-realm of the protagonist, lost between grief and hallucinations of her lost partner, Aurora (Maria Paiste).
