The Self

The Self, is a story about a day in the life of a competitive video game tournament. In a grimey, sweaty house we find our hero locked in heated battle with the voices in his head and with a controller in his hand. The Self is a story about what it means to compete and win. And more importantly what it means to lose. Based on a real lived experience, our film tells the story of how we attempt to find meaning, even in something as silly as a local video game tournament.

Director Biography - Samuel Luna III

The Lunas (brothers) are here to tell stories that no one else can. Their unique upbringing in a multiracial blended family brings a fresh voice to the film landscape. Heavily inspired by the traditional Speilberg sentimentality, the dreamlike scapes of Lynch and the sometimes hellish lows of Kubrick. The Lunas are your perfect blend of old time classics and new experiences.

Director Statement

As a filmmaker, the use of images, music, and dialogue can be the ultimate canvas. The tools and choices we have are limitless and I like the idea of not being bound to a construct. I believe that your narratives need to be personal and derivative. Make what you feel needs to be made. The world is a ball full of emotions and to replicate that in my films is my desire.
