Orbainak (The Scars)
The personal stories lived by the Uncle, the Father and the Son, respectively, form a tragic experience that is drawn along a line in time. This line is comparable to a crease in the pages of the family album, but also to a crack in the walls of the paternal house. It resembles the open wound created when drilling into a mountain, but also a scar in the collective imaginary of a society, where the idea of salvation finds its tragic destiny in the political struggle. What is at the end of that line? Will old war songs be enough to circumvent that destiny?

He was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 1988. He achieved his Bachelor degree at the University of the Basque Country and also carried out studies at Universitatea de Arta si Design din Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Universidade de Vigo (Spain). Over the past few years he has developed his artistic career in visual arts and audiovisual media, enrolling in personal projects both as author and cinematographer. His creations have been displayed in several cultural institutions such as Artium, Montehermoso or Matadero and in numerous film festivals in Europe, Asia and Latin America. In 2015 he collaborated as assistant director in the film "Where is the jungle?" directed by Ivan Castiñeiras and produced by LeFresnoy Studio. He completed his film studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona where he co-directed "The Interior City" that premiered at IDFA 2017, and at ESCAC (Escola Superior de Cinema I Audiovisuals de Catalunya). "Orbainak" is his first film on his own and it had its premiere at Punto de Vista 2019 and was awarded at Filmadrid. He is currently working on the development of his first feature film, 'Almanaka', at the same time as he finishes a short film for the collective movie 'Begirada'.
"Orbainak" explores the idea of wound in the collective Basque unconscious through the history of a family of farmers. This family condenses several aspects of the contemporary Basque political history, from the context of the War of 1936 and the post-war situation and Franco's dictatorship through the formation of a more or less incipient ETA and thus to the present time where the very idea of the Basque is in crisis. It is at the core of this crisis where "Orbainak" has its anchor and where the wound lies under its scars, which are a mark on the crust of time. For that reason, the elements that the film employs are at the same time document and something else: allegory.
In this way, "Orbainak" works with different image registers and the choice of aspect ratio serves as a methodology to force the original archive images -still photographs- to be reframed. This process, that we could call an archaeological method of the image, allows us to activate aspects of the image that were hidden until now and which condense the features of what we have been calling: the scars. From the perspective of film-essay, the images and sounds in the film are related to the problematic of memory in a critical and active way.
