Cinema as art is not separate from cinema as life. Cinema as a medium and the
experience of making a film from an abstract idea to a tangible form are part of
the greater context of human creativity. It’s an aspect of the nature of human
beings as sentient, sapient beings in the universe, which is beset by adversity on
all sides, especially in our current condition.
Totalitarianism, the fear of the untapped potential of Artificial Intelligence, the
destruction and degradation of the environment, all seem like existential threats. The
dangers, known and yet unknown, that involve us all.
However, they are all man made. From the most ancient tyrannical monarchy to
the most modern dictatorship, they were designed by us ourselves. The future AI
that may not uphold the "Three Laws of Robotics" are man made too. The same
goes for climate change and the collapse of established social contracts in this
post truth world of ours. They are not very different from cinema in the larger
picture. They are also tangible results of human creativity in a twisted, corrupted
way. Are our collective mistakes in the past, present and future the sum of our
human collective condition? Are human agency and nature doomed by ignorance
and misinformation?
The Scar is an attempt to express these questions. It’s a bleak glimpse of a
possible future that is based on the author’s lived experience: The degradation of
humanity and environment in a dictatorship, rejection of basic human rights,
infringements on privacy… In short, we can call it the total and utter antithesis of
life.
The Scar also attempts to answer. Using the medium of cinema to channel the
twisted corruption resulted from our follies, to turn it into something else.
A sublimation which is in itself part of the answer.
