o-region presents The Roughcut 60 Second Film Challenge

o-region in association with Screen Cornwall, Cornwall 365 and WTW Cinemas present:

The ROUGHCUT 60 Second Film Challenge

The rules of the competition are simple; make a film no longer than 60 seconds (including credits) that’s inspired by this year’s theme: MY PLACE.

The film can be any style or genre as long as it fits the BBFC’s classification for a 12A audience - https://www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/12

Best of all it’s completely free to enter!

Selected films will be screened at an event at the Plaza cinema, Truro where our judges (made up of industry professionals) will select BEST FILM, x5 HIGHLY COMMENDED AWARDS, BEST YOUNG PERSONS FILM, BEST CORNWALL BASED FILM and the audience will vote for the AUDIENCE AWARD.

• BEST FILM - £750 - to be selected by the judging panel
• x5 HIGHLY COMMENDED AWARDS - £100 - to be selected by the judging panel
• BEST YOUNG PERSONS FILM (under 18s) - £250 - to be selected by the judging panel
• BEST CORNWALL BASED FILM - £250 - to be selected by the judging panel
• AUDIENCE AWARD - £250 – voted for by the audience at our live screening event

Please not YOUNG PERSONS FILM entries are still eligible for all the other awards.

• Films must be connected to the theme of "MY PLACE" (filmmakers will need to explain this connection as part of their entry)

• Films must be no longer than 60 seconds including credits (organisers reserve the right to exclude any film that is over 60 seconds)

• All genres accepted (including animation & documentary)

• Films must be suitable for 12A rating - https://www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/12

• Filmmaker must take responsibility of the use of copyrighted materials

• Films can only be accepted online via FilmFreeway

• PLEASE NOTE WE ONLY ACCEPT ONLINE SCREENERS

• Films must be 24fps

• All films entered MUST be a downloadable link at the time of entry

• The organisers reserve the right not to screen any film if the material is deemed offensive or unsuitable

• You must be 12 or over to enter

• Jury will be convened by o-region of industry professionals

• Shortlisted films will be screened at The Plaza Cinema in Truro, Cornwall 27th March 2024

• Each film selected for screening will be eligible for x1 complimentary ticket to the screening event

• Screen Cornwall / Cornwall 365 has an automatic option of a one year non-exclusive licence for online and social media distribution, commencing 1st April 2024

Unofrtunately, even though my film was accepted it wasn't really shown any love. Our short film KumbuKumbu was an international film and we tagged them on our social media and got zero response. Worth it for the locals though I'm sure and I hope the event went well.

A truly inspiring filmmaking challenge that is completely and totally accessible to filmmakers at all levels, and rewards imagination and ingenuity.

The programme of 60 one minute (and under) films was exceptional, with a range of awards and commendations, it was such an exciting evening.

Personally it was very special to get to see my film in a cinema I grew up going to, and to take my daughter there, and be with some of my family in support. It was even more bewildering to pick up an award, I'm still in shock and still beaming from that surprise, as well as the event in general.

It was lovely to be in that company of creatives, to say "Hi!" in person to some people I've known for a long time and whose work I greatly admire, and just genuinely I recommend that any filmmaker keeps their eyes, ears, nose, whatever, to what o-region are up to, especially this contest which is a broad and generous and truly exceptional filmaking event!
