The Room Above

Elizabeth, a columnist in her late seventies, asks Redding, a disheveled and broken old man living in a resort mountain town, to dig into the past and help her solve the mysterious murder of a local girl named Mali. Fifty years ago, the young girl had been living under the pragmatic rule of her selfish and pragmatic aunt, Sarah, who was one of many living in secret in an old and backwards town. Once a teenager, Mali is forced to marry her sickly cousin, Lester. Hopeless Mali seems to find love and happiness with the arrival of a charismatic young man, Howard, but things take a dark and deadly turn. As Redding reluctantly searches his memories, he discovers that cruel deceptions played an enormous role in the girl’s miserable life, as well as his own.
