The River

The River examines the relationship between man and nature through stories about life along the magnificent Hudson River, one of the most valuable and endangered rivers in America. Through intimate portrayals of communities along the river, we examine how we alternately honor and neglect the nature that surrounds us.

Director Biography - Andi State

Andi State is an Upstate NY based filmmaker and photographer. She was born and raised in Romania, grew up in Canada, and now lives in the USA, all factors informing her worldview. She explores reality through films and photographs, focusing on alternative forms of community.

Self-taught, with a view informed by a bachelor's degree in political science and minors in philosophy and theatre, her work explores events in life reflecting the depths of human existence. She suspends moments in time while examining ideas of community, identity, and belonging.

Andi has worked in film, in various capacities, for 28 years. Her first film experience was as producer of the dark comedy 'Peepers' (2010), funded by Telefilm and distributed by E1 Entertainment, which was nominated for five Canadian Comedy Awards and three ACTRA Awards. She diverted from mainstream filmmaking soon after, and went on to make three experimental documentaries with a camcorder, directing, shooting, and editing on; 'Suuns Europe 2011' which premiered at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema, 'The Shigawake Movie', a portrait of a small town fair for CBC’s Absolutely Quebec, and 'The Pop Movie' (2020) , supported by the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec.

Her photographs have been featured in Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Dazed, and Fashion, and she self-published Death Valley, a book of photographic landscapes in 2017. She is currently working on the music series, Off the Floor, and a new film about the Hudson River.
