The Reveal

Stevie struggles to support their sister’s gender reveal party, while harbouring a gender update of their own. This charming comedy pulls back the curtain on gender performance of all varieties, and shines a whimsical light on the stumbling, imperfect, yet loving ways families show up for one another.

Director Statement

I used the process of writing “The Reveal” as a way to find the language to come out to my parents about taking testosterone. I wanted to create a realistic, awkward, and humorous portrayal of the anxiety that goes into a moment like that, and explore it using the tropes and trappings of a baby gender reveal party to highlight the contrasts (and similarities) between the two reveals. “The Reveal” is an exuberant slice of life and a timely trans film that centers joy and connection. Especially in today’s political and social climate of trans denial and erasure, “The Reveal” centers trans joy and acceptance, despite people’s differences.
