Charlie Kay is a multidisciplinary artist & emerging filmmaker working on unceded Kaurna Land in South Australia. As a creator, she values authentic, diverse storytelling with quirky comedy mixed in. Her most recent project ‘The Resolution’ is a romantic comedy short featuring a queer love story at its centre.
One thing that drives me as a creator is being able to give young people the stories that I longed for growing up. I wanted to see films that reflected my own experiences of love, identity and friendship. Experiences that encompassed; loving people regardless of gender, the intimate community that Queer people have, and the razor sharp nature female wit. I wrote 'The Resolution', not only as a homage to my lifelong love of Rom-Coms but, also, to communicate the need for diversity and inclusion in film. While films and storytelling have been making a gradual shift toward these ideals over the past decade, it is our job as creators to continue to promote equality in our work.
I want viewers to experience the wave of joy, awkwardness and fun that this film provides. The feelings you encounter while watching 'The Resolution' are not dissimilar to the feelings you get when you have a crush - weird and wonderful all at once!
Working with this cast and crew was an incredible experience. I loved solving problems with them, laughing with them, and braving the cold weather with them during each shoot. I am so proud of what we have achieved together.
Finally, this project would not have been possible without the help and advice of the Flinders University Screen and Media Production Department. Thank you Helen Carter, Bec Edwards and Matt Hawkins for your support and encouragement throughout this project!
