Director Biography - Haruka Horiuchi

Haruka Horiuchi is a filmmaker who moved from Japan to New York to pursue her passion for storytelling through film. After graduating from high school in Japan, Haruka embarked on her filmmaking journey at Brooklyn College in New York, where she has developed a unique voice in both narrative and documentary filmmaking.
During her time at film school, Haruka created several short films, exploring various genres and styles. Her thesis short film, The Visit, which she wrote and directed, has won several awards including the 2024 National Board of Review Student Grant Award.

Director Statement

One of my primary motivations in writing “The Refrigerator” was to experiment the power of visual storytelling by making a film without any dialogues. I wanted to challenge myself to “show” rather than “tell".

This film was born out of my own frustration with the “woman in the refrigerator” trope.
