As a first generation Vietnamese American inspired by the lives of his family and relatives, filmmaker Jonathan Vu is always looking for ways to tell the stories of those who would never be able to tell them otherwise. His love for the look of film pushes his unique creative instinct born from the environment he was raised in. Despite being a quiet and shy person in real life, he finds his voice through the medium and speaks loudly and clearly.
I made The Red Thread because I wanted to document my parents in a more permanent way first and foremost. I didn't want their history or legacy to be lost after they're gone one day. This film, to me, is a reminder of the people who worked so hard, sacrificed so much, and still let me be the person I wanted to be. Through this, I hope for my film to inspire others, and to capture just a sliver of what makes the roller coaster of life so beautiful.
