The River is a chilling depiction of divorce and its effects on children. The film grapples with mental illness and how parents can use it to their advantage. I wanted to create an intimate story that shared my experiences with uncommunicative parents. The river itself is a metaphor for the destruction, division and pain caused to Ellie. In a way, Ellie's hallucinations are the roots of her parent's neglect.
