The Quiet Mind Swimming

‘The Quiet Mind Swimming’, explores the battle between the attempt to quiet my thoughts and the impossibility of achieving this. It plays on common contemporary practices which look to achieve wellness within experiences of nature. Though my experience as a regular sea swimmer means that I practice various rituals in preparation for cold water, I cannot guarantee that I will win the battle of quietening my mind…life will almost always interrupt. The work explores this conflict between the euphoria achieved from the meditative act of swimming alone with the ever-present active and critical mind.

Director Biography - Tina O' Connell

Tina is currently going into her final year as mature student at LSAD studying Sculpture and Combined Media. She found art about 10 years ago, and completed Fetac Level 5 and 6 at Ennistymon School of Art. She was immediately drawn to sculpture and the use of materials. When she is not studying in college, she can be found wood carving or stone carving at home. Tina's artworld is very much her whole world, she takes inspiration from her environment which is her playground for hiking and sea swimming in the West of Ireland. She has taken part in many community-based art projects in her hometown of Lisdoonvarna, along with "Drawn from Borders" an Artlink ran project ran during the pandemic. She recently participated in an EU-Run Project "Living Playground" in Portugal. Tina has also exhibited her work in many exhibitions over the past number of years. This year her work ‘The Quiet Mind’ was shown at an exhibition in Athlone "Through our Eyes" along with another exhibition in Limerick "Taking Root"’. Her performance piece ‘The Kitchen Sink’ was a huge hit at ‘Milking The Sun’ exhibition in Ballynacourty House and Gardens, along with her wood carvings that were done in situ. Tina takes inspiration from Irish female artists like Aideen Barry with her use of sculpture through video productions that include comedy in her work. She is also drawn to Aine Philips work for her use of humour and Vanessa Daws who is a swimmer like herself. Tina's main objection with her artwork is to make the viewer feel, to have a reaction and to be able to relate to her art through her performative pieces, videos and sculptures.
