Writer Statement

In 2020, the phrase “Black Lives Matters” became the modern crucible for evangelical churches. A socio-political split coursed through congregations based on their response to the movement.
I was raised in a pretty conservative Kansas community, and I’d like to reach back to those rural roots and extend this message of inclusion and support for the religious progressives and social activists who are often ostracized in the Bible Belt. I’d also hope that this story warns my fellow Midwesterners about the lurking threat of right-wing extremism that is brewing in their midst.
As an outspoken Black activist, I know those dangers all too well. So, through the eyes of a female Christian minister, and through this fight for the marginalized, my film depicts and honors the struggle of liberal voices in rural areas and warns about the dangers which accompany that social activism.
And stories like this are happening to community leaders and sanctuaries all across this nation.
