Director Biography - Tiago Ribeiro

Born in 1979 in the same city where João César Monteiro was born, the small Figueira da Foz in the centre of Portugal, Tiago Ribeiro grew up a cinephile. As a young adult, he enrolled in a couple of screenwriting and editing courses, having abandoned most, and finished only a couple. He wrote often on film, being most known for his collaboration with the website À Pala de Walsh – some of Ribeiro’s texts were included in the book the website team published. “The Picture” is his film debut.

Director Statement

In a genre classified area, we can include “The Picture” in a cloudy zone between thriller and everyday realism. There is the banality and the mundane of the daily life (smoking, drinking coffee, domestic labour in the kitchen) and there is the strangeness that disrupts that quotidian normativity (a body on the floor, body parts in the fridge). However, the two “worlds” interconnect seamlessly, like a flow of images and sounds that denies an easy categorization of what belongs to one genre and to the other.
