The Perished
Dealing with a pregnancy termination in Ireland has been hard for Sarah Dekker. Shunned by her religious zealot family and after also breaking up with her unforgiving boyfriend, she travels to a sympathetic friend’s house in the country to recover. But unbeknownst to her the provincial pile sits atop a mass grave of unwanted babies and their lost, confused sprits want to be reborn. Feeding on guilt and remorse the spirits need a mother. And they just might have found one in Sarah…

Paddy Murphy is an Irish film-maker based in the Limerick/Clare region. Paddy came to film from a background in video game development. From 2009-2012, he released over a dozen games across a variety of platforms including Playstation, iPhone and PC as part of Open Emotion Studios.
Paddy Murphy's debut feature film The Three Don'ts released in 2017 to festival acclaim winning numerous awards and secured worldwide distribution with Hex Media in 2018. Paddy's second feature film, The Perished has just been completed and world premieres at FrightFest 2019.
Paddy has also written and directed over a dozen short films with Irish film collective Celtic Badger Media. Some of these shorts have screened all over the world & won numerous awards.
In Ireland, women have been treated like second class citizens for generations. Women who had children out of wedlock were forced to give the babies up and work in effectively, labor camps, called Magdalene Laundries or Mother and baby homes.
Many children died under the care of the church, as evidenced by the discovery of a mass baby grave (one of many) under a mother and baby home in Tuam, Galway in 2014. The church disallowed any discussion on the idea of women rights or abortion for over 30 years & hid these mass graves and countless other secrets from the people of Ireland.
During the 2018 referendum to repeal the eight amendment to the Irish constitution, an article that allowed an unborn baby equal rights to the mother and denied the mother any right to make decisions for herself in relation to her pregnancy, I noticed that everybody - on both sides of the debate - were screaming.
This lack of communication lead to bitter arguments and entire families falling apart. This gave me the impetus to make The Perished. To try and create empathy for people on both sides of the argument - and the souls lost in those awful magdalene laundries. Children with no voice. Another aim was to show Ireland's women in a non-stereotypical role as modern & progressive.
The Perished literally means everything to me as I believe it's an incredibly important film for Ireland - and the whole world, considering what's going on in Alabama and in Northern Ireland. Thank you for your time & I hope you enjoy our monster movie with a message.
Peace.
