Christian Miller and Reagan Cotton developed a love of story and film from an early age, whilst growing up together in northwestern Michigan. In college, they studied history and economics respectively, before pursuing filmmaking after graduation.
They plan never to make a film without each other. The Out Man is their second short film, and previews a feature film, following the example of "Whiplash" and other writers and directors.
We are setting out to tell stories with highly entertaining narratives, but which also explore ideas and philosophies, bringing them to bear upon the narrative. The Out Man is our demonstration of this – though it becomes clearer in the feature-length version, which this short previews to potential producers. We find that great stories not only entertain (though they must), but also offer audiences some challenge to their pre-existing ideas, or give them a new lens for viewing a previously innocuous object or neglected concept. Great stories not only engage us, they also make us think, deeply. They have the potential to change us. We should not end viewing a film and never consider it again; we should want to return to it – if not the film itself, then the story and characters via our minds. This is why we think The Out Man is needed, not just as a story, but for film itself. It is our opinion that, today, too few stories accomplish this. As Del Toro said, “if you want to see different films, get out there and make them.” This is what we are hoping to do. To tell the stories we feel are told too infrequently, and because, ultimately, filmmaking and storytelling is our burning passion.
