The Other Men in Blue
The disowned siblings of ‘actual’ cricketers, blind cricketers of India are creating a mark for themselves; despite the visual handicap and lack of support. They are World Cup winners - two ODI World Cups and two T20 World Cups in the last seven years. The film tells the story of their sport, its players and what it takes to conquer infinite odds.
The documentary narrates how these cricketers are able to play cricket, despite their impediments. How they perceive Cricket - essentially a visual sport - whether it be the batsman’s hand-eye coordination or the fielders’ ability to aim at the stumps. It’s the first time blind cricket has been experienced this closely- the game and the players - their lives and their aspirations. It features women blind cricketers from the Delhi team- sweating and roughing it out to excel. We see players with their families - living a life as ‘normal’ as you and I.
To know them is to experience a story of grit, determination and humongous will in the face of acute uncertainty. This film serves as an instrument to bring to the mainstream, the lives of these players and their sport which according to them are one and the same. The media - social, print or electronic will not celebrate them - they are not saleable in the mass market. It is upto us as filmmakers to define and create their legacy; and allow people to see them, as not just ‘The Other Men in Blue’ but as individuals with an indomitable will.

A documentary is as unique as its subject; and what can be more unique than the blind playing cricket - a game of hand-eye coordination & throws hitting stumps! It’s the first time blind cricket has been experienced this closely- the game, the rules, the players - their lives and their aspirations. It features women blind cricketers from the Delhi team- sweating and roughing it out to excel. We see players with their families - living a life as ‘normal’ as you and I.
There are three qualities that define a person: will, instinct and faith. The journey of this film has been one that has tested all these qualities for ourselves and exemplified them in our subjects. This documentary has been an emotional journey. Closely observing these players and knowing their life stories has been quite cathartic.
We can only hope that this film serves as an instrument to bring the lives of these players and their sport - which according to them are one and the same- to the mainstream. And allow people to see them, as not just ‘The Other Men in Blue’ but as individuals with an indomitable will.
