The Origin of Zelda - A Goiânia Drag Queen Story

The Origin of Zelda tells the story of Danilo, a young professional educator in the prime of his career, outcast from his family, who finds personal fulfillment in performing in drag. From the suburbs of Goiania to the art theatres of Rio de Janeiro, Zelda has had an illustrated career, and this is her first film.

At a time in his life when he was experiencing hardship, Zelda won third prize as Sailor Moon in a drag competition. Starting with borrowed lipstick and a dream, Zelda went on to entertain audiences as Marie Antoinette and wearing outfits designed by famous ateliers.

Director Statement

The Origin of Zelda was a special film, that I made with my friend, Danilo, who is the actor who performs Zelda, and to follow his/her path, and how he/she worked so hard to be an LGBTQIA+ artist in a homophobic country, and talk about poetry and politics, inspiring me to tell his/her history in a poetic way, like his/her poems. The Origin of Zelda was my first documentary and showed me what it is to be a drag queen, it inspired me to get to know this world, to create a drag persona, and make more and more drag art and films about drags.
