The Notorious Blue Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

On the corner of a highway intersection in rural Pirron Yallock is a blue church - the home of Captain Colin "Cupcakes" Carter & Pirate Priestess Angela Carter. The Carters are Pastafarians, and “worship” The Flying Spaghetti Monster, a conceptual identity embodying nonsense. But more pressingly, they're a couple whose courtship spans 28 years, thousands of kilometres, and at least one bottle of rum.

Director Statement

In 2022, during a road trip through the Great Ocean Road, I saw a strange-looking building - a blue church in the middle of rural Victoria, an anomaly against the expanses of farmland and highway. I didn’t think anything of it until a dear friend pointed out that she too had been on a road trip and seen the very same building. We began wondering about who might live in the funny little church, and promised each other that we’d make it our business to find out.

We began researching and found that this wasn’t your grandfather’s church. This mysterious baby blue building was a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster - the very first in the world. We quickly got to work on becoming “experts” on all things Pastafarian and embarked on a journey to meet Colin and Angela Carter - the owners of the humble blue building that we’d fallen in love with.

We went to the tiny Pirron Yallock knowing next to nothing about these two, with the intention of making a Pythonesque farcical documentary about rum and religion. But when we got there, it quickly became evident that this wasn’t the story that wanted to be told. What grabbed us was the relationship between Colin and Angela - a decade-long workplace flirtation that culminated in a grandiose pirate-themed wedding - again, the very first in the world.

Colin and Angela swore by taking the act of silliness seriously. They swore by fun, they swore by whimsy, and they swore by love. And suddenly, we were making a romantic comedy. A romantic comedy about a middle-aged Australian couple who’d eloped and been married in the still-unfolding tradition of a religion based on pirates and pasta. Once again, the very first in the world.
