Director Biography - Ieuan Coombs

I graduated from drama school in 2016, and have since worked as a professional actor in London. In 2018, I discovered a love of directing. My first film, "Newbie" screened at film festivals both in the UK and abroad, including Two Short Nights and Portland Comedy Film Festival. This is the second short film that I've both written and directed.

Director Statement

The Next One is about a fleeting moment of intense connection. Two people share something powerful, and choose to prolong it for as long as they can.

I was very interested in French Cinema at the time of writing. It struck me how, in the films of Xavier Dolan or Jacques Audiard, something seemingly ordinary is often made beautiful and cinematic. I wanted to employ some of the techniques they used to accomplish this.

I also wanted to move away from dialogue as much as possible, as my last film was very dialogue heavy. As such, there are very little scripted lines within the film. The lines are almost exclusively improvised by the actors.
