Meet the students like Elijah Garcia and Beamber Davis, who are learning to swim and hoping to become lifeguards in this historically Black community of Las Vegas, where the legacy of segregation and discrimination have exposed children to unequal risks.

Faviola Leyva joined One Day as a multimedia journalist in 2017. She earned her Master's of Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley where she specialized in video storytelling and reporting. She received her Bachelor's of Arts in Sociology and Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before Teach For America, she worked as a video production teacher at Oakland International High School and Fremont High School. Faviola has experience reporting in Argentina, Belize, and nationwide throughout the United States. She lives in San Diego, California.
