"The Monster Beneath Us" is a slow-burn gothic horror set in the wilds of Yorkshire in 1898. The film explores themes of isolation, otherness and loss, with its monster - a Boggart - being an allegory for grief and the different ways we deal with this overwhelming emotion. Over the course of the film, our characters react to the Boggart in a variety of ways (for example, befriending it, ignoring it, fighting it) which drives their individual narratives and creates conflict, moments of fright and ultimately, our final showdown. We chose Yorkshire as the story’s (and filming) location to showcase the amazing landscape and filming potential of this part of the UK; as filming took place in the middle of January, the countryside also acted as the perfect, icy backdrop to bring our dark and gloomy project to life.
