Director Biography - Juhyun Jane Jeong

Annyeonghaseyo! Let's start with the basics of saying "hello" in Korean. Juhyun Jane Jeong is a Korean-born filmmaker who moved to the U.S. when she was young. Growing up struggling between her identities as a Korean and as an American, she pursued a major in college that could help her tell stories she wants to portray, which led her to come to the FSU College of Motion Picture Arts to get her MFA in Production. Because she is still deeply attached to her Korean heritage, what excites her about filmmaking is how one story can be told from a distinct perspective, based on a diverse background and culture. Stories can be similar but nothing is ever the “same.” Annyeonghigaseyo (Bye)!

Director Statement

The inspiration of “The Marionette” came from a combination of a small happening that I witnessed during a general audition and a major social issue in South Korea regarding high number of suicide rates among students due to pressure and stress from education. The film began as a simple story of an overbearing stage grandmother and an innocent granddaughter who lost her mother a few years ago, but through the writing process, it turned into the Director taking this opportunity to question about how parenting styles can critically affect their children’s self-esteem.
