Director Statement

These days, child exploitation is increasingly worrying as if it is a common practice. Instead of protecting their children, parents become the perpetrators. For instance, some parents use their children for money by uploading the children’s daily activities while ignoring their privacy. In response to this, I would like to show the beginning process of child exploitation which often negligible or even common to others. I also would like to bring forward the role of parents who are capable to stop the exploitation, instead of becoming the perpetrator. Within the process, I adapted one part of Maman Suherman’s novel, entitled Bapakku Indonesia. My decision to adapt this work sprung due to its compatibility to represent my insecurity towards this phenomenon. In this film, child exploitation is wrapped up with phenomenon of the development of gambling lottery and ‘kode buntut’ or tail code in Indonesia. This phenomenon is chosen because the gambler would do anything to win the lottery, even by exploiting children.
