Director Statement

To say that making The Limits was extremely challenging might sound adequate on paper, but those words barely even touch upon just how punishing and ultimately transformative the experience really was.

One of the most difficult aspects of production was our desire to make the movie feel as tactile as possible: we wanted real sets, real fire, real explosions, etc. It was my dream to create something that could successfully bridge the use of both practical and digital effects. We wanted to recall the old-school charm of action and horror films of the late 80s, while also offering something new with the selective use of CGI. I think we were able to achieve a perfect marriage of the two, resulting in a visually rich action-adventure experience.

Calling this film “experimental” is probably appropriate, but I think it might be even better described as “experiential.” I wanted to make an abstract action film, something with clear character goals, yet something also highly impressionistic: an immersive experience to drop our audience into, leaving them to piece it together themselves and interpret as they wish. Most importantly, we wanted viewers to have fun.

Many would caution against a first-time filmmaker trying to make a psychedelic action-epic for his first film, and I think for good reason. And yet, a part of me always knew The Limits could never have been anything other than extremely ambitious, and that it’s bloody, beating heart would always proudly mark its sleeve.
