The Legend of Pink

"The Legend of Pink" is set in a street in West Oakland. The street is terrorized by a violent drug gang. The year is 1989.

Pink, a drag queen (the term used in 1989), lives on this street in an abandoned Victorian with her illusions of grandeur. She meets DeMario in a club full of drug dealers and ex-convicts. He stands out to Pink for being a big time player in Oakland's criminal underworld. She hopes to capture his heart and have him put her into the "diva" lifestyle where she thinks she belongs.

In reality, DeMario is Bradford from San Francisco. He is searching for his place in the world as a Black middle-class young man.

Bradford is fascinated by Pink's creating her own world. He risks going not only to the bar, but to Pink's boudoir in a neighborhood terrorized by a violent drug gang. His naivete becomes a tragic legend.

"The Legend of Pink," the provocative play, was produced by Theater Rhino in San Francisco in 2017. The production was videotaped and made into a video.
