Director Statement

Attitudes towards refugees and immigrants has taken a starkly negative tone in the past 5 years. Many of the beliefs people hold about what happens when immigrants come to a new country are patently false. The Sikh community in Vancouver is a brilliant example of what is possible once a country embraces immigrants. I have spent 2 years filming and talking with refugees and immigrants, hearing their stories and struggles. My family came from Afghanistan almost 100 years ago and to survive they lied about our heritage. It wasn't until I was 33 that we rediscovered our history. Because of this I have a real sense of loss not growing up knowing the whole truth of where I come from. I want to tell stories that make it easier for those arriving into America and Canada today so they don't have to lose their culture just to survive.
