Sempre fui fascinada por documentários e filmes baseados em fatos reais. O que me interessa é o encontro da realidade com o cinema, quando a ficção e o real se misturam, tornando indistintas verdade e reinvenção.
A iniciativa de retratar o tema do Alzheimer precoce decorre da incidência da doença na minha mãe, Marcia Woolf, diagnosticada com 57 anos, quando ainda era ativa profissionalmente. Embora o Alzheimer seja associado em geral à população idosa, nos últimos anos temos assistido a um aumento progressivo da ocorrência da doença também em sua forma precoce. Essa alteração gera outros desafios, como mudanças na organização comportamental, dependência antecipada e um impacto social significativo.
Essa história pessoal foi a inspiração para o curta-metragem Rei na Gaiola. Depois de longas conversas com a guionista Fernanda Leme, surgiram Ernesto e Simone. Fernanda me ajudou a criar um viés mais lúdico, já que vivo há oito anos o cotidiano da doença. No percurso de uma elaboração conjunta, entendemos que o filme não era apenas sobre um homem de meia idade infligido pelo Alzheimer precoce, mas, principalmente, sobre a relação entre pai e filha e suas transformações acarretadas pela doença.
Apesar das dificuldades, existe sutileza nessa circunstância. A relação se modifica, e outra forma de ligação se inicia: Simone se surpreende com atitudes e possíveis espasmos de lembrança do pai, o que parecia impossível. Para Ernesto, o tempo é sempre igual — não há passado, presente ou futuro; tudo acontece naquele segundo que se passa e não volta mais. Trata-se de uma realidade efêmera.
O filme é o primeiro resultado de uma pesquisa continuada sobre a abordagem do Alzheimer precoce e os seus impactos. Essa investigação também será desdobrada, posteriormente, em forma de documentário.
Se estar vivo é poder ser interpelado por doenças de difícil prevenção, torna-se fundamental discutir e divulgar experiências de vida.

I've always been fascinated by documentaries and movies based on real facts. What interests me is the encounter between reality and cinema, when fiction and reality are mixed, making truth and reinvention indistinct. The initiative to portray the theme of early Alzheimer's stems from the incidence of the disease in my mother, Marcia Woolf, diagnosed at 57, when she was still professionally active. Although Alzheimer's is generally associated with the elderly population, in recent years we have seen a progressive increase in the occurrence of the disease, also in its early form. This change creates other challenges, such as changes in behavioral organization, anticipated dependency and a significant social impact. This personal story was the inspiration for the short film "Rei na Gaiola". After long conversations with screenwriter Fernanda Leme, Ernesto and Simone appeared. Fernanda helped me create a more playful approach, as I have been living the daily life of the disease for eight years. In the course of a joint elaboration, we understood that the film was not just about a middle-aged man inflicted by early Alzheimer's, but, mainly, about the relationship between father and daughter and its transformations caused by the disease. Despite the difficulties, there is subtlety in this circumstance. The relationship changes, and another form of connection begins: Simone is surprised by attitudes and possible spasms of memory of her father, which seemed impossible. For Ernesto, time is always the same—there is no past, present, or future; everything happens in that second that passes and never comes back. It is an ephemeral reality. The film is the first result of ongoing research into addressing early Alzheimer's and its impacts. This investigation will also be unfolded later in the form of a documentary. If being alive means being challenged by diseases that are difficult to prevent, it is essential to discuss and disseminate life experiences.
