Director Statement

The Key is story about growth and redemption. It takes place in Shenzhen, a modern metropolis in China. People living in this city have to endure severe stress.

The short film expresses an idea of staying strong and striving for a better life. It tells the audience that even though illusion could bring us warmth while truth is ruthless, we shouldn’t sink down forever, but instead transfer the hope in dream into reality. In The Key, the elder brother gradually relieves from his brother’s death and started to change himself and be a better person. He smokes less and less, and begins taking bake flowers, a symbol of love and hope. He learns to love again, just as in the dream.

The Key also discusses about humanity and complexity. The elder brother appears to be indifferent towards his brother in the beginning despite of his love deep inside; scenes from his past memories also uncovers his stressful and vulnerable sides. His character is self-contradictory, but true.
