The Interview

"The Interview" is a story about an unlucky actor Sasha, who has been playing the same roles in a provincial theatre for many years. Everything would have continued like this, but the universe has its own plans for the hero: the artistic director decides to modernize the theatre and removes the actor from the leading roles, the wife informs him of her pregnancy, and telephone scammers steal not only Sasha's money but also his colleagues'. The hero has no choice but to undertake a desperate act - he takes part in an interview, where he will have to play an incredibly difficult and, apparently, the most important role in his life.

Director Biography - Egor Yatsenko

The director Egor Yatsenko was born in Krasnodar in 1990. He knows firsthand how difficult it is to conduct interviews: after graduating from the Moscow State University with a bachelor's degree in law, he began working as an HR, opened his own recruiting agency and held thousands of interviews with applicants. Later, his professional experience helped him in creating his debut short film "The Interview", which he filmed as a student at the Moscow Film School. The “interview” helped to gain self-confidence not only for the imaginary actor Sasha, but also for Egor himself.

Director Statement

"The Interview" is a film about problems that are familiar to everyone. The idea seemed to be in the air: I just remembered the stories of my friends and acquaintances who had most unpleasant experience of this sort. For example, one guy being half asleep “presented” 55 thousand rubles to telephone scammers. Interviews are some special sort of entertainment: a friend of mine actually got insulted when he was applying for a job, afterwards the employer said that it was a kind of a “stress test”; another employer simply left one of my friends to sit alone in the office, meanwhile he stood outside for half an hour waiting for her reaction.
It is not surprising that self-esteem and trust in other people after such an experience plummets. The goal of our film is to inspire the viewer, to strengthen his self-confidence and to make fun of all these people who for some reason believe that they have the right to hurt others. Another important idea of the picture is the pursuit of a dream: the main character still takes a risk and finally realizes that he is capable of something more than the role of a birch in the fairytale about Pinocchio.
I think that everyone has had a similar painful experience. Perhaps that is why our project attracted cool professionals who, above all, are wonderful people: everyone worked with sheer enthusiasm, putting all their efforts into the artistic and technical components of the picture. It is important for each of us that, after watching, the viewer leaves the hall a little happier and more confident in himself and his strengths.
