The Hotel

The Hotel is a documentary to mark the closing of a rural hotel. The Royal Hotel played an important role in the lives of many local people. It was treasured as a social space for locals and guests alike. This film takes stock of the hotel’s long history, and how the flow of time and experiences are remembered differently by everyone. It considers what lingers throughout the building, the passing of time represented through the layers and collages of memories and stories.

Director Statement

Greer’s film-making and research centres on her experiences as an artist, a ‘guest’ and ‘host’ in rural communities in Ireland, where building relationships at a local level, has revealed wider notions of hospitality towards ‘outsiders’ on a national and international scale. Over time, it’s become clear that the act of being a guest, or host, is deeply personal, shaped by an entanglement of influences and experiences, built up over time that make up who you are. Greer has identified the hotel as an ideal site to explore how the role of guest and host plays out and is expressed. How these roles were enacted and are remembered, opens a philosophical and ethical discussion around patterns of difference. Using text, photography, film and through exhibition, Greer evidences and shares these dialogues and exchanges. This research and practice builds on more than a decade of experience in social practice, cultivated across many roles: artist, collaborator, facilitator, curator and producer.
