The Hornbill Lady
A Muslim lady challenges the gender stereotype to work as a hornbill conservationist in the unrest area of southern Thailand. She takes on the work that no other women do, hanging 30 meters above the ground to repair and build hornbills’ nests. Through hope and despair, “The Hornbill Lady” follows her and her team as they work to ensure the survival of the endangered species aptly known as the ‘Farmers of the Forest.’

Wasawan Rongdet has been working as a field director for children and family TV series, Toongsangtawan (ทุ่งแสงตะวัน), at Payai Creation Co., Ltd. for over 20 years. She is a crucial force that has turned this awards-winning series into one of the longest-running television programs in Thailand. Wasawan’s work has led her to Nureehan, an apprentice conservationist who is this documentary’s protagonist. Fascinated by Nureehan’s mission and determination to defy the odds, Wasawan spent 2 years filming “The Hornbill Lady,” her first one-off documentary.
