The Hitchhiker

The Hitchhiker and M are two easygoing musicians with different goals in life. M is making her way to the big city as the Hitchhiker is on his way to nowhere in particular. By chance, they meet each other on the road and bond over hitchhiking on the highway and future life plans.

Director Biography - Christopher Debo

Hello, my name is Chris Debo I'm a second-year cinema student at Virginia Commonwealth University. I'm a 25-year-old on the path to graduate in 2022. I spent a while finding my way to film, starting out first as a premed student at William and Mary before switching to Foreign Affairs at UVA. In the middle of this journey, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the late age of 21. Following my diagnosis, I took an extended leave from school. Only after all this tumult did I begin to pursue filmmaking. My hope is to help create pieces that are thoughtful and reparative.

Director Statement

This film is for me, and many of my peers from VCU that I worked with, our first production. We were unable to work on projects we normally would have been able to because our education was forced to go online because of COVID. But now that the world has re-opened, if at least for a short time, we are a part of a unique group of filmmakers. Filmmakers who learned and grew during the pandemic, but whose works exist in the world after covid. Our voices are tied inextricably to the influences of lockdown. I wanted this film to be reparative, to remember positively some of the things that might have been lost during the pandemic. We set out to make this film to recapture the significance of strangers. Meeting someone new, and making a connection with them. It speaks to a sort of connection that I value and want to remind people is valuable.
